The easiest way to make a gallery wall

Ida Andersen

Making a gallery wall can be a fun and creative way to display your favourite photos and artwork. Here are some simple steps to help you create an easy gallery wall.

You will need:

  • Frames for your prints

  • Nails or screws, depending on the type of wall you have

  • Hammer or drill/screwdriver

  • Baking paper (Gift paper can also be used)

  • Masking tape

  • Pencil

  • Scissors

Here's how you do it:

Step 1

Spread out your baking paper on an even surface and place your frame on top. You can advantageously lay the frame so that it follows the edges of the baking paper, so you don't have to cut more than absolutely necessary.

Step 2

Draw the outline of your frame on the baking paper. It is important that you are as precise as possible.

You now have a template of your frame.

Step 3

Cut out the template and number it. Also remember to number the frame on the back so you know which template belongs to which frame.

Step 4

Place the template on the back of the frame and mark the location of the suspension. It is important that the template lies exactly across the back of your frame, otherwise it will not fit when the frame comes up on the wall.

Repeat the process with all your frames.

Once you've made all the templates, it's time to find the right layout for your picture wall.

Step 5

Place all your frames on a large surface - for example your floor or your bed. Move the frames around until you have found the right layout for your picture wall.

Step 6

Now it's time to hang your frames on the wall. Take your templates and hang them with masking tape on the wall in the same layout as the one you just came up with. Adjust as necessary.

Step 7

Now you can nail or drill and insert screws where you have marked the location of the suspension on your template.

Remove the template and hang your frame. Repeat the process with all templates.
